Kanvas Biosciences raises $48M to turn gut microbes into cancer drugs
What's the deal? Kanvas Biosciences, a spatial biology startup, has closed a $48M Series A to develop microbiome-based therapeutics for cancer patients. The round was co-led by existing investors DCVC and Lions Capital, with participation from Gates Foundation, ATHOS KG, Germin8, Ki Tua Fund, and Pangaea Ventures. The fresh capital brings Kanvas' total funding to $78M.
The money will fund clinical trials for KAN-001, the company's lead drug candidate designed to help cancer patients who don't respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). It will also advance commercial partnerships built on Kanvas' spatial imaging and manufacturing platform.
Why now? Over 50% of solid organ cancer patients receive ICIs, but only 10% achieve complete responses. Fecal microbiota transplants from ICI responders have shown they can convert non-responders into responders — but they carry pathogen risks, manufacturing challenges, and scalability issues.
KAN-001 aims to solve those problems. In a recent trial, fecal material from the same donor whose strains were used to develop KAN-001 showed high engraftment rates, restored immune response, and no ICI-induced colitis. Kanvas says the clinical pathway has been "substantially de-risked."
The company has also opened a GMP manufacturing suite to support production at scale.
What could go wrong? Microbiome therapeutics have a checkered history. The field has seen high-profile failures, and translating promising mouse-model results into human efficacy remains a major hurdle. Kanvas' KAN-001 has demonstrated safety and efficacy in animal studies, but clinical trials in humans are the real test — and many drug candidates falter at this stage.
Manufacturing complex live biotherapeutic products with hundreds of microbial members at clinical and commercial scale is itself an unproven endeavour.
The signal: The round reflects renewed investor appetite for microbiome science after years of scepticism. Gates Foundation's involvement signals interest beyond oncology — Kanvas is also developing what it calls the world's first fully synthetic microbiome replacement product.
"I began my career as a physician and always dreamed of being able to develop new drugs that could help the patients I hadn't been able to treat with existing therapies," said Matthew Cheng, co-founder and chief executive officer. "It's an incredible privilege to bring Kanvas' technology to the broader LBP market."
If Kanvas can prove KAN-001 works in humans, it could open a new front in immuno-oncology — turning the gut microbiome from a research curiosity into a clinical tool.
