Reprogram Biosciences raises $6M to turn tumours into immune-system activators

Founded in 2025, the company is building a new class of treatments based on in situ cell reprogramming. Its approach delivers mRNA-encoded gene combinations directly into tumours, activating antigen-presenting function in tumour cells and converting the immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment into a site of active immune priming.

Proceeds will fund the company's lead programme, expansion of its AI discovery engine CellRecodeX, and chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) activities.

Why now? Solid tumours remain notoriously hard to treat despite years of progress in immunotherapy. Current approaches often rely on exogenous immune cells or systemic agents that struggle to penetrate the tumour microenvironment.

"Our approach is differentiated by its reprogramming of the tumor itself into a site of immune activation," said Rustam Esanov, chief executive officer and co-founder. Colin Greenspon, co-founder and partner at Narya, noted the team moved "from concept to in vivo data in six months with unparalleled capital efficiency."

What could go wrong? The company is preclinical, meaning its technology has not yet been tested in humans. mRNA delivery to solid tumours is an unsolved challenge at scale, and translating promising in vivo data into clinical results has tripped up many oncology startups before.

A $6M seed round is also modest for a biotech programme that will eventually need costly clinical trials. The company will likely need significantly more capital to reach meaningful milestones.

The signal: Reprogram's seed round sits at the intersection of two active venture themes — AI-driven drug discovery and novel immunotherapy mechanisms for solid tumours, a category responsible for roughly 10 million deaths annually. The involvement of Narya, co-founded by JD Vance and built to back unconventional founders, and 1517 Fund, known for betting on young, contrarian technologists, suggests investor conviction is rooted in the team's speed and capital efficiency rather than late-stage de-risking. If the in situ reprogramming approach translates beyond preclinical models, it could carve out an entirely new therapeutic modality in a market where checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T therapies still struggle to reach most solid tumours.
