AVIAN raises $2.6M to bring AI thermal monitoring to fire-prone industrial sites
What's the deal? AVIAN, a Zurich-based industrial AI company, has raised a $2.6M pre-seed round led by Founderful. The startup builds always-on thermal monitoring systems for fire-prone facilities such as sawmills, recycling plants, chemical processing sites, and oil and gas operations.
AVIAN's cameras continuously watch critical components — motors, bearings, conveyors, electrical cabinets — and learn what "normal" looks like at each plant. The system detects early heat drift before a failure occurs and routes smart alarms to the right people with enough lead time to act.
The company was profitable and entirely bootstrapped for two years before raising. It plans to use the funding to expand engineering, speed up deployments, and push into new verticals. AVIAN is on track to surpass $1M in ARR in 2026.
Why now? Insurance markets are tightening across Europe and North America. Fine dust, friction, electrical faults, and aging equipment have pushed fire risk into territory that insurers will no longer underwrite at viable premiums. Sites that were insurable five years ago are now deemed too risky.
The industry's standard approach — a technician walking the floor with a handheld thermal camera once a quarter — misses the critical window when a component starts running hot. AVIAN replaces that with continuous, AI-driven monitoring.
What could go wrong? At the pre-seed stage, scaling hardware-plus-software deployments across multiple industries and geographies is a tall order. Each vertical — recycling, chemical processing, maritime — has distinct operational environments that could slow rollout. Competing against established industrial safety vendors with deeper pockets is another challenge.
The signal: Over two years, AVIAN says it has prevented more than $50M in damages from fires and equipment failures across roughly 50 sites in nine countries. One customer, Kamps Pallet, cut annual insurance costs by 10% at a single sawmill after deploying the system.
The broader trend is clear: as climate risk, aging infrastructure, and tighter insurance markets converge, industrial operators are looking for continuous monitoring that goes beyond periodic inspections. AVIAN's bet is that the thermal camera alone isn't the product — the full stack of hardware, AI, and 24/7 human support is what operators actually need.
