Paratus Energy raises $250M in oversubscribed bond placement
What's the deal? Paratus Energy Services, a Bermuda-based energy services holding company, has completed a private placement of $250M in five-year senior secured bonds at a coupon rate of 8.125%. The bond issue comes with a broader borrowing framework of $500M.
The placement was "significantly oversubscribed," attracting global investor demand. Net proceeds will go toward refinancing existing senior secured notes maturing in July 2026 and general corporate purposes.
Settlement is expected around May 22, with the bonds to be listed on Euronext ABM.
Why now? Paratus has senior secured notes coming due in July 2026 — just two months away. The company announced fixed-income meetings on May 4 and closed the deal three days later, moving quickly to lock in refinancing before the maturity date.
What could go wrong? An 8.125% coupon is not cheap. While the oversubscription signals confidence, the rate reflects the risk profile of an offshore energy services company operating in Mexico and Brazil — markets that carry political and regulatory uncertainty.
Paratus also relies on a concentrated asset base: five jack-up rigs in Mexico through its Fontis Energy subsidiary and six pipe-laying vessels in Brazil through SeagemsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a 50/50 joint venture. Any disruption in either market could strain its ability to service the new debt.
The signal: The significant oversubscription of a $250M high-yield bond for an offshore energy services firm underscores sustained investor appetite for Latin American oil and gas infrastructure, even as the broader energy transition narrative intensifies. With both Fontis Energy and Seagems still classified as early-growth stage businesses, the deal suggests the market is pricing in considerable upside for offshore drilling and subsea services in Mexico and Brazil — and that Paratus's secured asset base gave bondholders enough comfort to pile in at a sub-8.5% coupon.
