Malaysia's Glide Technology lands RM2.5M to scale palm-based industrial oils

What's the deal? Glide Technology Sdn Berhad, a Malaysian lubricant contract manufacturer, has secured RM2.5 million in financing from Small Medium Enterprise Development Bank Malaysia Berhad (SME Bank) under the MySMELady 2.0 programme — a Shariah-compliant facility designed to support women entrepreneurs.

The funds, part of the Women Entrepreneurs Economic Fund (Dewi) initiative, will go toward laboratory equipment, production machinery, and electrical infrastructure upgrades that will more than triple the company's power capacity.

The financing will also help scale Glide's palm-based transformer oils, developed with the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), and its Petronas Tranol Glide product range.

Why now? Founded in 2007, Glide Technology is a 100% Bumiputera-owned SME with export operations in Angola, exclusive global commercialisation rights from MPOB for palm-based transformer oils, and a role as the appointed Business Continuity Plan partner of Petronas Lubricants International. The company appears ready to move from niche player to scaled producer.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong framed the investment as a model for Malaysia's women-led economic empowerment push. "This shows Malaysia's business ecosystem can move beyond the 'buy cheap, sell cheap' trap," he said.

What could go wrong? Scaling industrial manufacturing is capital-intensive and operationally complex. Tripling power capacity suggests a significant jump in production ambition — execution risk is real, particularly for an SME competing in global commodity-adjacent markets.

Palm oil-derived products also face reputational and regulatory headwinds in some export markets, which could complicate international expansion.

The signal: Malaysia is channelling targeted public financing toward women-led SMEs in advanced manufacturing — not just retail or services. The MySMELady 2.0 programme signals a deliberate push to build homegrown industrial brands that compete on technology and value, not just cost. Glide's palm-based transformer oils sit at the intersection of two national priorities: palm oil value-chain upgrading and SME internationalisation.
