Contrario raises $2.3M for AI recruiting platform already at $6M annualised revenue
What's the deal? Contrario, a San Francisco-based startup that pairs human recruiters with AI agents, has raised a $2.3M seed round led by Nexus Venture Partners, with Inventum Ventures and Goodwater Capital also participating. The company officially launched after quietly reaching $6M in annualised revenue and paying out more than $1M to recruiters — all in under six months.
Co-founders Arya Marwaha and Aditya Sood met in their freshman dorm at Stanford and later dropped out of their master's programmes to build the company full time. More than 200 companies, including Slash, Wispr Flow, and Listen Labs, already use the platform.
Contrario integrates into a company's Slack and applicant tracking systems to automate scheduling, coordination, and follow-ups — freeing recruiters to focus on evaluating and closing candidates. The company claims businesses using it receive candidates three times faster than through traditional agencies, with 80% of submitted candidates advancing to first-round interviews.
Why now? The recruiting industry is caught between two forces. Companies want faster, cheaper hiring — especially in a market where speed determines who lands top talent. At the same time, AI has matured enough to handle the operational grunt work that has long consumed recruiters' time. Contrario is betting that a hybrid model — human judgment plus AI automation — can outperform both legacy agencies and pure software tools.
"Founders should be spending their time pitching the company, evaluating talent, and closing great hires. Not managing the process around it," said Marwaha.
What could go wrong? Recruiting is a brutally competitive market. Established players like LinkedIn, Lever, and a growing crop of AI-native startups are all chasing the same efficiency gains. Contrario's hybrid model adds complexity: it must keep both its recruiter network and its AI tooling sharp to maintain quality at scale. And $6M in annualised revenue, while impressive for a seed-stage company, doesn't guarantee the unit economics will hold as it grows.
The signal: Contrario reflects a broader pattern in how AI is reshaping professional services. Rather than replacing humans outright, the most successful models augment them — automating the low-value tasks while letting people handle the nuanced, high-stakes work. In recruiting, that means AI handles the admin while humans build relationships and close hires. The startup's early traction suggests companies are ready to pay for that blend, and investors are paying attention to startups that ship revenue before they ship press releases.
