Beijer Ref expands into South Florida with HVAC distributor acquisition

What's the deal? Beijer Ref, one of the world's largest refrigeration wholesalers, has acquired AM Distributors, a US-based HVAC distributor with annual net sales of roughly SEK 460M (about $42M). The deal gives the Swedish group a foothold in South Florida.

AM Distributors, founded in 2014 and headquartered in Miami, operates branches across Miami, Miramar, and Hialeah. It will continue operating under its existing brand, and its management team stays on.

Why now? South Florida is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the US — and one of the hottest, making HVAC distribution a reliable growth market. Beijer Ref, already present in 45 countries, has been steadily expanding its North American operations.

"The company has built a solid platform in its market, and we look forward to further developing the business together with its existing management team," said Beijer Ref chief executive officer Christopher Norbye.

What could go wrong? Beijer Ref said the acquisition will have only a "minor positive impact" on its results, suggesting the deal is small relative to the group's scale. Integration risk is limited since AM Distributors keeps its brand and leadership, but that also means synergies may take longer to materialise.

The signal: This is part of a broader pattern of European industrial groups rolling up specialist distributors in the US, where fragmented HVAC and refrigeration markets offer consolidation opportunities. As climate change drives demand for cooling solutions, companies like Beijer Ref are positioning themselves in high-growth, heat-exposed regions.
