Tauron gets PLN 65M EU loan to replace 55,000 street lamps

What's the deal? Polish energy company Tauron has secured PLN 65M (roughly €15M) in financing through state bank BGK under Poland's National Recovery Plan (KPO), funded by the EU. The money will go towards replacing 55,000 street lamps with energy-efficient alternatives across residential areas.

Why now? The funding comes as Poland accelerates spending under its KPO — the country's plan to tap into EU recovery funds. Energy efficiency upgrades, particularly in public infrastructure like street lighting, are a key priority under the programme's green transition goals.

The signal: The deal reflects a broader push across Central and Eastern Europe to modernise ageing energy infrastructure using EU funds. Street lighting may seem mundane, but it accounts for a significant share of municipal energy costs — and replacing tens of thousands of lamps at scale can deliver meaningful emissions reductions.
