Cohere acquires Reliant AI to push into healthcare with North for Pharma

What's the deal? Toronto-based AI scaleup Cohere has acquired Montréal- and Berlin-based Reliant AI, a biopharmaceutical data processing startup founded by former Google DeepMind leaders. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal brings Reliant AI's research team, proprietary biomedical datasets, and domain-specific technology into Cohere's flagship enterprise AI platform, North. The result: North for Pharma, a purpose-built agentic AI system for research, clinical development, and scientific analytics.

Cohere will also assume Reliant AI's customer relationships, which include pharmaceutical giants like GSK, Ipsen, and Kyowa Kirin.

Why now? This is Cohere's second acquisition in a month, following its planned takeover of German firm Aleph Alpha in April. The back-to-back deals signal an aggressive push to expand Cohere's European footprint and move into industry-specific verticals.

"Healthcare represents one of the most consequential opportunities for AI and it demands secure, sovereign, and domain-specific systems," Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez said. "Together, we will accelerate progress in healthcare, building on our shared footprint across Canada and Germany to serve these critical sectors."

Reliant AI launched out of stealth in August 2024 with $13.5M in funding. Its first product, Reliant Tabular, helped life science analysts find scientific evidence through automated systematic reviews and analyses.

What could go wrong? Healthcare is one of the most heavily regulated sectors in the world. Building AI products that meet the stringent data privacy, security, and compliance requirements of global pharmaceutical companies is no small feat — and any misstep could carry serious reputational and legal consequences.

Cohere also faces stiff competition. Larger, better-funded rivals are eyeing the same healthcare AI opportunity, and integrating two acquisitions in quick succession carries its own execution risk.

The signal: As consolidation accelerates across the AI sector, Cohere is carving out a distinctive niche. Rather than chasing "do-everything" frontier models, it is betting on specialised, smaller LLMs tailored to specific industries — a strategy that prioritises enterprise value over benchmark bragging rights.

The healthcare play also reinforces Cohere's broader positioning as a sovereign AI provider. With fewer non-US foundation model companies left standing, Cohere is marketing itself as the alternative for organisations that need security, data privacy, and regulatory compliance — especially in Europe and Canada. Gomez called North for Pharma a "cornerstone" of the company's expanding portfolio of industry-specific AI products, suggesting more verticals could follow.
