Brightstar Capital Partners invests in vision care platform Simon Eye

What's the deal? Brightstar Capital PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a middle-market private equity firm based in New York and West Palm Beach, has made a strategic investment in Simon Eye Holdings, an integrated vision care platform operating across the Mid-Atlantic region. The deal was announced on May 7.

Simon Eye, founded in 1987 and headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, runs a network of clinics offering eye exams, optical retail, and surgical procedures. CEO Edward DiMartino will continue to lead the company, and he and the management team will retain a meaningful ownership stake. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The investment falls under Brightstar's lower middle market strategy, which targets family-, founder-, and operator-led businesses. Neil Collier, a healthcare executive with experience scaling optometry platforms, will serve as executive chair of Simon Eye's board.

Why now? Vision care has become an increasingly attractive sector for private equity, as ageing populations drive steady demand for optometry and ophthalmology services. Simon Eye's centralised infrastructure — spanning scheduling, revenue cycle management, marketing, and clinical administration — makes it a natural platform for buy-and-build expansion.

"Choosing the right partner for our next chapter was an important decision," DiMartino said. "Brightstar stood out for its collaborative approach to working alongside management teams and its experience supporting the growth of healthcare platforms."

What could go wrong? PE-backed roll-ups in healthcare have drawn scrutiny over whether aggressive growth strategies compromise care quality. Maintaining the company's clinical reputation while scaling will be a key challenge.

The signal: The deal reflects private equity's continued appetite for healthcare services businesses with recurring revenue and fragmented markets ripe for consolidation. Vision care, in particular, has seen a wave of platform investments as firms look beyond dental and dermatology for the next scalable vertical. Brightstar's playbook — pairing an experienced operator like Collier with a founder-led business — is a template increasingly common across the sector.
