Volve Creative and Asobisystem partner to take Japanese culture IP global
What's the deal? Tokyo-based Volve Creative has entered a capital and business alliance with Asobisystem, a culture-focused entertainment company. Under the deal, Asobisystem acquired a stake in Volve Creative, though the financial terms were not disclosed.
Volve Creative is a creative company that builds intellectual property rooted in music, spanning both real-world and virtual formats — from artists and creators to projects and communities. Asobisystem manages artists, produces music festivals, runs IP-driven retail, and promotes regional revitalisation through entertainment. It was founded in 2007 and is known for championing Japanese pop culture globally.
Why now? Japanese music and subculture are enjoying a surge in global demand. Anime soundtracks, J-pop, and virtual artists have found growing audiences worldwide, creating an opening for companies that can package these cultural assets as exportable IP.
Both firms see this as the right moment to combine forces. Volve Creative brings deep expertise in music production, IP development, and subcultural networks. Asobisystem contributes its artist management experience, culture-marketing know-how, and established international relationships.
What could go wrong? Cultural IP is notoriously hard to scale across borders. What resonates in Tokyo's subcultural scenes doesn't always translate for audiences in New York or London. The partnership also lacks a disclosed financial anchor, making it difficult to gauge the depth of commitment.
Competition is fierce, too. Major labels and entertainment conglomerates are already investing heavily in exporting Japanese culture, from Sony Music to Kadokawa. Standing out will require sharp creative instincts and disciplined execution.
The signal: This deal reflects a broader trend of smaller, culture-native companies teaming up to compete in the globalisation of Japanese entertainment. Rather than waiting for a major label to pick them up, firms like Volve Creative and Asobisystem are building their own pipelines — blending real and virtual formats to reach fans directly.
"We want to nurture new Japan-originated content across both real and virtual axes," said Volve Creative chief executive officer Eita Hokazono. Asobisystem's Yusuke Nakagawa echoed the ambition: "Together, we will create opportunities for new talent and content to spread globally."
As Japanese culture continues to punch above its weight internationally, expect more strategic alliances among boutique creative firms aiming to own the full IP value chain — from creation to global distribution.
