TalTech spinout DCR Technologies lands Nordic Science Investments backing for DC energy tech
What's the deal? DCR Technologies, a spinout from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), has secured investment from Nordic Science Investments (NSI) to build next-generation direct current (DC) energy infrastructure. The deal's financial terms were not disclosed.
The Estonian startup develops power electronics and a data platform that help existing AC-based systems work more efficiently with DC devices — without ripping out core infrastructure. It targets sectors including solar, batteries, EVs, data centres, and industrial automation.
Led by Oleksandr Husev, Kristjan Lind, Bohdan Pakhaliuk, and Oleksandr Matiushkin, the company has four patent-backed invention disclosures and an early collaboration with Schneider Electric.
Why now? The global energy landscape is shifting toward DC. Solar panels, batteries, and electric vehicles all run on direct current, yet most grids and buildings still use alternating current (AC) — a legacy of choices made over a century ago. Bridging that gap is becoming urgent as renewables and electrification scale up.
"150 years after AC won the 'war of AC/DC currents,' the world is inevitably shifting toward direct current," NSI said. "The structural building blocks of the next energy architecture are being created today."
DCR Technologies is moving from prototype development toward pilot deployments, putting it at an inflection point where venture backing can accelerate real-world validation.
What could go wrong? The company is still pre-revenue and transitioning from lab to market. Pilot deployments must prove that its hybrid AC/DC approach delivers meaningful efficiency gains at commercial scale. Entrenched AC infrastructure and conservative industrial buyers could slow adoption.
Competition is another risk. Large incumbents like Schneider Electric — currently a collaborator — could develop rival solutions in-house.
The signal: This investment reflects growing VC interest in deep-tech energy startups tackling infrastructure-level problems rather than just software layers. NSI cited DCR's "research-intensive innovation, defensible technology, systems-level problem solving, and early industrial market pull" as key factors.
It also underscores the Baltics' emerging role as a deep-tech hub, with university spinouts attracting specialised Nordic capital. As decentralised energy systems gain traction, startups that can ease the AC-to-DC transition — without costly full replacements — sit at a strategic chokepoint in the energy value chain.
