Software Solutions acquires EDGE Document Solutions to expand public sector offerings
What's the deal? Software Solutions, Inc. (SSI), a fully employee-owned provider of ERP software for the public sector, has acquired EDGE Document Solutions, an electronic document generation platform. The product, now rebranded as VIP Edge Checks, helps organisations create, deliver, and archive critical documents as digital files or printed on blank stock.
The deal expands SSI's customer base across 42 US states and several Canadian provinces, spanning industries including education, legal, accounting, utilities, banking, manufacturing, and nonprofits.
Why now? Public sector organisations are caught between modernisation pressures and operational realities. "Some processes are ready to go fully digital, while others still require print for workflow, compliance, or constituent needs," said Rick Fortman, SSI's chief executive officer.
By acquiring EDGE, SSI can offer customers a hybrid approach — digital and print — rather than forcing them into a single delivery model.
The signal: The acquisition reflects a broader trend in government and institutional tech: incremental digitisation rather than wholesale transformation. Organisations that handle high volumes of checks, invoices, purchase orders, and statements still need print capabilities alongside digital workflows. Vendors that can bridge both worlds — rather than betting entirely on paperless — are positioning themselves for the messy middle ground where most public sector buyers actually operate.
