Try Dealroom →, has acquired a 40% stake in JD SportsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Thailand to strengthen its grip on the country's booming sports fashion market. The deal pairs CRC Sports' 129-store Thai retail network with JD Sports' global brand relationships and merchandising know-how.

JD Sports operates more than 4,900 stores across 49 countries, carrying brands like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and On. It currently has 15 stores in Thailand.

Tai Chirathivat, chief executive officer of Central Retail Brands and Specialties, said the partnership will unlock exclusive global product licensing and open the door to Thailand's sports lifestyle market — which he valued at over 35 billion baht ($1.1 million) and growing at roughly 6% annually. CRC Sports aims to capture 40% of that market and become its top player.

Why now? Thailand's athleisure and premium sneaker segments are expanding fast, driven by younger consumers. CRC Sports — which runs Supersports, Rev Runnr, and Mono Store — sees the JD Sports tie-up as a way to accelerate into this higher-margin territory before competitors lock down brand partnerships.

What could go wrong? Integrating two retail operations with different merchandising cultures is never simple. JD Sports Thailand's footprint is still small at 15 stores, so rapid expansion will require significant capital and execution. There's also the question of whether exclusive global product access will translate into enough differentiation in a market already crowded with sportswear retailers.

The signal: Dealroom classifies CRC Sports as a "breakout" company backed by the mature Central Retail group, underscoring how established Southeast Asian conglomerates are deploying strategic equity stakes — rather than organic build-outs — to move up the value chain in retail. With JD Sports already a mature, 4,900-store global operator, the partnership gives CRC Sports a fast track to exclusive brand access in a Thai sports lifestyle market growing at roughly 6% a year, a pace that makes the segment one of the region's more attractive consumer bets.
