ADTANK secures funding from AZ-COM founder to accelerate AI push

What's the deal? ADTANKDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Inc., a Tokyo-based advertising and AI consulting firm, has secured a funding round led by Masaru Wasa, founder and president of AZ-COM Maruwa HoldingsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a major Japanese logistics group. The investment will fuel two priorities: developing proprietary AI products and pursuing "acqui-hiring" — acquiring teams led by young technical leaders to bolster the company's talent base.

ADTANK, founded in 1992, plans to use the capital to shift from a labour-intensive model to a knowledge-intensive one, integrating automation and optimisation into its advertising and consulting services. The company is also preparing to transition to a holding company structure.

Why now? ADTANK is in the middle of a business model transformation ahead of a planned holding company restructuring scheduled for February 2026. CEO Kenichi Sugano said the funding will help the company "maximise the corporate value of the entire ADTANK group swiftly" as it scales its AI capabilities under the new framework.

Wasa, who built AZ-COM from a single-truck operation into a large logistics conglomerate, said ADTANK's acqui-hiring approach reminded him of his own philosophy. "Growth hinges on 'people' and 'partnerships'," he said. "I see immense potential in CEO Sugano's dedication and the vision of transforming the industry."

What could go wrong? The specific funding amount was not disclosed, which makes it hard to gauge the scale of ADTANK's ambitions against its resources. Acqui-hiring is notoriously difficult to execute well — integrating outside teams into an existing culture often leads to friction and talent attrition. And pivoting from services to proprietary AI products is a capital-intensive bet that many consulting firms have struggled to pull off.

The signal: The backing of an early-growth ad-tech firm by the founder of a mature logistics conglomerate underscores how AI is increasingly viewed as a horizontal capability that cuts across industries. ADTANK's acqui-hiring strategy — buying teams rather than recruiting individuals — points to a persistently tight AI talent market in Japan, where demand for technical leaders far outstrips supply.
