Betterguards acquires wearable tech startup Nextiles to build injury prevention platform

What's the deal? BetterguardsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a sports technology company focused on injury prevention, has acquired NextilesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a materials science and wearable tech startup. Nextiles founder and chief executive officer George Sun will join Betterguards as chief technology officer. The combined entity aims to create a wearables ecosystem spanning injury prevention, athlete recovery, and performance monitoring.

Betterguards makes a velocity-based joint protection system used by professional teams and athletes in more than 30 countries. Nextiles builds flexible electronics sewn into fabric that measure human movement — forces, range of motion, and micromovements. Its research was backed by the National Science Foundation and the US military.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Why now? Both companies were selected for the NBA LaunchpadDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → programme in 2022, and Betterguards said the acquisition reflects that programme's role in connecting and accelerating sports tech companies. The deal signals Betterguards is ready to move beyond hardware-only protection and into a data-driven platform play.

"Bringing Nextiles and George into our ecosystem will redefine how the industry approaches injury prevention and recovery," said Tony Verutti, chief executive officer of Betterguards. "Together, we will build things neither of us could have done alone."

What could go wrong? Merging a hardware-focused injury prevention company with a materials science and data analytics startup is easier said than done. Integrating two different product stacks — rigid joint stabilisers and flexible fabric sensors — into a single coherent platform will take time and capital. The wearable sports tech market is also increasingly crowded, with competitors ranging from well-funded startups to major sportswear brands investing heavily in smart apparel.

The signal: Both Betterguards and Nextiles are classified as early-growth-stage companies, making this a consolidation play between two startups rather than a big-fish acquisition — a sign that smaller sports tech firms see merging complementary capabilities as the fastest route to a defensible platform. The NBA Launchpad programme, which selected both companies in 2022, is increasingly acting as a matchmaker that accelerates not just product development but M&A among its cohort.
