Sanford Health merges with North Memorial to enter Twin Cities market

The combined entity will create a new Twin Cities region of Sanford Health, led by North Memorial chief executive Trevor Sawallish.
"North Memorial has had an incredible reputation in the region for years and years," Sanford president and chief executive Bill Gassen said. "This provided great opportunity to come together with an organisation that brought complementary capabilities."
Why now? North Memorial has been under mounting financial pressure. Roughly 75% of patients at Robbinsdale Hospital use government programmes for payment, contributing to a $50M loss last year, largely from uncompensated care.
Shortly after becoming chief executive in 2024, Sawallish told the Maple Grove City Council the system was nearing a fiscal "breaking point." The strain at Robbinsdale also stalled a needed expansion at Maple Grove, where the emergency room was handling twice its designed patient volume.
North Memorial approached 22 healthcare organisations nationwide as potential partners. Sanford wasn't on the original list — but after identifying a dozen key criteria, Sawallish made the call. "With Sanford, we found a really good match," he said.
What could go wrong? Hospital mergers regularly draw scrutiny from regulators and community advocates concerned about reduced competition, higher prices, and service cuts. A system absorbing a partner with a $50M annual loss also faces integration risk — turning around that financial trajectory while maintaining care quality won't be straightforward.
