Hypercharge boosts EV charging ports 45% with Eddie acquisition
What's the deal? Hypercharge Networks Corp., a Canadian EV charging network operator, has acquired Eddie — a Quebec-based charging network operator — from AXSO. The deal, effective May 1, adds more than 2,700 deployed charging ports to Hypercharge's network, a roughly 45% increase from its previously reported total of over 5,700 ports.
The acquisition includes the Eddie brand, customer contracts, intellectual property, and other operating assets. It makes Hypercharge one of Canada's largest charging network operators.
Why now? Quebec accounts for more than 50% of all zero-emission vehicle sales in Canada, making it the country's biggest EV growth market. Hypercharge described the deal as a strategic step to expand its footprint and recurring revenue base in the province.
David Bibby, Hypercharge's chief executive officer, said the transaction is "non-dilutive for shareholders, accretive from day one" and part of a broader capital deployment strategy aimed at accelerating the company's path to profitability.
What could go wrong? Integrating a separately built charging platform and its customer relationships is never seamless. Hypercharge will need to retain Eddie's existing clients — particularly in the multi-residential segment — while folding the network into its own systems.
The broader Canadian EV charging market also remains dependent on government incentives and consumer adoption trends, both of which can shift quickly.
The signal: Consolidation is picking up in the North American EV charging sector. Smaller operators built during the early subsidy-fuelled expansion are now being absorbed by larger players seeking scale and recurring revenue. Hypercharge's move signals that the market is maturing — growth increasingly comes through acquisition, not just organic deployment.
For Hypercharge, the playbook is clear: buy established networks in high-adoption regions, layer on recurring software and network fees, and use that base to push toward profitability. Expect more deals like this across Canada and the US as the sector consolidates.
