Kiwa Suomi acquires Finnish IVD assessment firm Sertio
What's the deal? Kiwa Suomi, part of the global testing, inspection, and certification group Kiwa, has acquired Tampere-based Sertio Oy, a notified body specialising in in vitro diagnostics (IVD) conformity assessment. The deal strengthens Kiwa's position in medical and healthcare device compliance — particularly in the IVD sector governed by the EU's IVDR regulation.
Sertio holds official status as a notified body under the EU's In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (IVDR), meaning it is authorised to assess whether diagnostic devices meet regulatory requirements before they can be sold on the European market.
"Sertio's deep regulatory and IVDR expertise as a notified body, combined with Kiwa's strong international expert network, creates excellent conditions to expand services globally and meet the sector's growing demands," said Kiwa Suomi country director Marko Väänänen.
Sertio chief executive Mikko Soikkeli said the company can now offer a broader range of services as part of the Kiwa group.
Why now? The EU's IVDR, which came into full effect in May 2022, has created a bottleneck in the diagnostics industry. Manufacturers need notified bodies to certify their products, but there are very few such bodies accredited under the new regulation. Acquiring one gives Kiwa immediate capacity and credibility in a market where demand far outstrips supply.
The deal is part of Kiwa's broader growth strategy to expand its medical and health technology services both in Finland and internationally.
What could go wrong? Notified body status is tightly regulated. Maintaining accreditation requires ongoing compliance with stringent EU standards, and any lapse could undermine the acquisition's value. Integration challenges — merging a small specialist firm into a large multinational — also pose risks to service continuity for Sertio's existing clients.
The signal: As regulatory complexity in medtech deepens across Europe, companies that hold scarce compliance credentials become prime acquisition targets. The deal reflects a broader trend of large testing and certification groups snapping up specialist notified bodies to capture a growing share of the EU's tightening regulatory apparatus. For IVD manufacturers, consolidation among assessors could mean broader service offerings — but also fewer independent options.
