Nanoveu acquires Spinoff Robotics to build full-stack drone autonomy

The acquisition brings two proprietary drone platforms already in commercial use: ALICE, a tethered drone built for heavy payloads and resistance to jamming, and METRON, a camera-based 3D measurement system with AI-powered millimetre-level precision. Spinoff co-founder Dr Chee How Tan, a specialist in aerial robotics autonomy, will join the Nanoveu team.

Why now? The global military drone market is forecast to reach roughly $98.24B by 2033, and Nanoveu wants to position itself early in high-value defence and commercial segments. The acquisition completes its vertical integration across silicon (its ECS-DoT chip), airframe, tethered station-keeping, and sub-millimetre sensing — letting it engineer its chip directly into drones from inception.

Spinoff has already validated both platforms with major Singaporean customers, including Gardens by the Bay, the Land Transport Authority, and the Home Team Science and Technology Agency.

What could go wrong? Integrating a Singapore-based engineering team into an ASX-listed company brings cross-border complexity. Nanoveu is also making a big bet on defence markets, which are notoriously slow-moving and require extensive regulatory approvals. Whether validated reference designs can convert into large-scale contracts remains to be seen.

The signal: Both Nanoveu and Spinoff Robotics are classified as early-growth companies on Dealroom, making this less a consolidation play and more a bet that two small firms can punch above their weight by merging complementary capabilities. It's a playbook gaining traction as the drone market scales toward nearly $100 billion: rather than competing on individual components, emerging players are racing to lock in full-stack control before larger defence primes move to dominate the autonomy layer.
