Carbonfact acquires Vaayu to build fashion's biggest sustainability data platform

What's the deal? Paris-based Carbonfact has acquired Berlin-based Vaayu, merging fashion's two largest environmental sustainability platforms. The combined entity will serve over 300 apparel and footwear brands — including On, New Balance, Ganni, The North Face, and Asket — on a single product-level environmental dataset.

Carbonfact, founded in 2021, already worked with 200+ brands. Vaayu, founded in 2020 by Namrata Sandhu, served 100+ brands. Together, they claim to operate the industry's largest fashion-specific environmental data foundation, covering 150,000+ emission factors, 200+ textile processes, and 650+ material categories across 144 countries.

Why now? A wave of regulation is forcing the fashion industry to shift from corporate-level reporting to product-level reporting. The EU's Digital Product Passport (DPP), the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), France's Eco-Score, CSRD, California's SB 253, and the Empowering Consumers Directive all demand defensible environmental data at the product level.

Spend-based estimates no longer cut it. Brands need granular data built on primary supply chain information — and the compliance deadlines are approaching fast over the next two years.

What could go wrong? Integrating two platforms, teams, and customer bases is never simple. Vaayu's clients will need assurance that the data rigour they relied on carries over. And while regulation is driving demand, enforcement timelines in the EU have a habit of slipping — which could slow adoption.

The broader sustainability software market also faces scepticism. If brands treat compliance as a checkbox rather than a genuine decarbonisation tool, the platform's value proposition weakens.

The signal: Carbonfact, tagged as a "breakout" stage company on Dealroom, is using acquisition rather than organic build to fast-track its data moat — a playbook more common in mature SaaS markets than early-stage climate tech. With regulation forcing product-level reporting across the EU and California simultaneously, the race to become fashion's default compliance layer is compressing, and consolidating Vaayu's 100+ brand relationships accelerates that land grab considerably.
