Brazil's Grupo Piracanjuba acquires Laticínio Sertão to expand in the northeast
What's the deal? Grupo PiracanjubaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, one of Brazil's major dairy companies, announced on May 19 the acquisition of Laticínio Sertão, a cheese manufacturer based in Monteirópolis, Alagoas. The deal's financial terms were not disclosed.
Laticínio Sertão, founded in 1955, produces a range of dairy products including coalho cheese, mozzarella, provolone, ricotta, cheddar, butter, and requeijão. Its distribution is concentrated in Brazil's northeast region.
The contract transfers full control of the operation to Grupo Piracanjuba. Production will initially continue under the Laticínio Sertão brand before gradually shifting to the Piracanjuba name.
Why now? The acquisition is part of Piracanjuba's broader push into Brazil's northeast — a region the company considers strategic for expanding its national footprint. "The expansion in the northeast represents an important advance for the company's logistics competitiveness," said Grupo Piracanjuba president Luiz Claudio Lorenzo. He added that the company has already begun studying future investments to expand the plant's capacity and product mix.
What could go wrong? The deal still requires approval from Brazil's antitrust regulator, the Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE). Until the agency issues a final decision, the two companies must continue operating independently.
Integration risks are also worth watching. Transitioning the brand, scaling production, and managing a facility in a rural area far from Piracanjuba's home base in Goiás could present logistical challenges.
The signal: Grupo Piracanjuba, classified as a mature-stage company on Dealroom, is using M&A rather than organic growth to plug geographic gaps — a playbook increasingly common among Brazil's established food and dairy groups. The northeast's expanding consumer base and relatively fragmented dairy market make it a prime target for consolidation, and acquiring a nearly 70-year-old regional brand offers both immediate shelf presence and a ready-made supply chain.
