Burckhardt Compression acquires Italy's Fornovo Gas to grow in biogas

What's the deal? Swiss compressor maker Burckhardt Compression has signed an agreement to acquire Fornovo Gas, an Italian provider of gas compression solutions for biogas and compressed natural gas (CNG) applications. Founded in 1969, Fornovo Gas employs roughly 120 people and generates double-digit millions of Swiss francs in annual sales. The deal is expected to close within two months.

Why now? Biogas and CNG markets are growing as Europe pushes for energy security and the energy transition. Burckhardt's chief executive officer Fabrice Billard said the acquisition would expand the company's coverage of biogas applications in Europe while providing a global platform to grow its mid-size configurable compressor business.

Fornovo Gas brings complementary technical expertise, a broader product line, and long-standing customer relationships — filling a gap in Burckhardt's existing portfolio.

What could go wrong? Integration is the classic risk. Folding a 120-person Italian specialist into a Swiss multinational means aligning cultures, systems, and sales channels. And while biogas demand is rising, the sector remains policy-dependent — shifts in European subsidies or regulation could slow growth.

The signal: This deal reflects a wider pattern of established industrial players acquiring niche clean-energy specialists to position themselves for the energy transition. Rather than building capabilities from scratch, incumbents are buying their way into fast-growing segments like biogas and biomethane — a sign the market is maturing enough to attract serious consolidation.

Burckhardt plans to share further details at its annual media and analyst conference on June 4, 2026.
