AB Mauri Brasil to buy Casa de Bolos cake franchise with 600+ stores

What's the deal? AB Mauri Brasil, a subsidiary of UK-based Associated British Foods (ABF), has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Casa de Bolos, a Brazilian cake franchise chain with more than 600 stores across over 250 cities in Brazil.

After closing, Casa de Bolos will continue operating independently as a business unit within AB Mauri Brasil, keeping its brand, product portfolio, positioning, and franchise model intact.

Why now? The deal combines two businesses with what the companies describe as shared values, complementary capabilities, and a common commitment to quality and sustainable growth. For ABF — a global food, ingredients, and retail conglomerate — the acquisition deepens its footprint in Brazil's consumer market through an established franchise network.

What could go wrong? The transaction still requires regulatory approvals. Integrating a 600-plus-store franchise operation into an ingredients-focused parent carries execution risk, particularly around preserving the brand identity and franchisee relationships that made Casa de Bolos successful in the first place.

The signal: Global food conglomerates are increasingly looking beyond ingredients and B2B supply chains to acquire direct-to-consumer brands — especially franchise models that offer scale without heavy capital expenditure. Brazil's franchise sector, one of the largest in Latin America, continues to attract international buyers betting on the country's growing middle class and fragmented retail landscape.
