Belgian smart locker firm Mobile Locker acquires Germany's SafeBOXen
What's the deal? Mobile Locker, a Belgian maker of smart modular locker systems, has acquired Berlin-based SafeBOXen (Modul-Kombinat GmbH), a company that has served roughly 40 major German festivals since 2016 — including Rock am Ring, Wacken Open Air, and Lollapalooza Berlin. All SafeBOXen staff will be retained.
The deal follows Mobile Locker's 2025 establishment of a subsidiary near Düsseldorf and a late-2025 acquisition of its sales partner in the Basel region. The company operates in 26 countries with offices in Belgium, Germany, the UK, France, and Switzerland.
Why now? Mobile Locker posted roughly 40% revenue growth in 2025 and aims to maintain that pace in 2026. Belgian investment holding Creafund, which took a stake in 2025, is bankrolling the expansion.
A key driver is digitisation: much of SafeBOXen's existing locker fleet still runs on analogue systems. Mobile Locker plans to fully digitise and automate those units by summer 2026, promising faster operations, better security, and seamless integration with event workflows.
"This acquisition strengthens Mobile Locker's international position and serves as an effective means to accelerate organic growth," said Jan-Willem Callewaert of Creafund. He called it a potential first step in a broader consolidation strategy.
What could go wrong? Digitising an analogue locker fleet across dozens of festival sites by summer 2026 is an aggressive timeline. Integration risk is real — especially during peak festival season, when any downtime directly affects paying attendees.
The company is also expanding into new verticals like airports and train stations, markets with far stricter security and procurement requirements than festivals. Stretching across too many fronts at once could dilute focus.
The signal: The deal reflects a broader pattern of roll-up strategies in fragmented, low-tech service industries. Smart lockers sit at the intersection of physical infrastructure and digital experience — a combination increasingly valued by event organisers and public-space operators alike.
Mobile Locker's emphasis on European manufacturing — design, innovation, and final assembly in Belgium, with steel sourced from other European countries — also fits the growing trend of supply-chain localisation. Co-CEO Jef Van Hyfte stressed the importance of "a short, controllable supply chain."
With Creafund signalling appetite for further acquisitions, Mobile Locker appears to be positioning itself as the pan-European consolidator in a niche that still has plenty of analogue players ripe for a roll-up.
