BindTech acquires Dekker Bookbinding, its 7th deal in 10 years
What's the deal? BindTech, the US national leader in bookbinding and book finishing services, has acquired Grand Rapids-based Dekker Bookbinding. The deal, effective May 1, adds one of Michigan's most established bookbinders to BindTech's growing platform.
The acquisition brings BindTech's total to over 400 employees and 600,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehousing space across the country. It is the company's seventh acquisition in the past decade.
"Dekker represents everything we look for in an acquisition partner," said BindTech chief executive officer John Helline. "Their heritage, their people, and their desire to grow all stood out from the start."
Why now? BindTech has been on a steady roll-up spree, consolidating competitors under one roof. Chief operating officer Chad Dillon noted that former rivals — including Kingsport Press, Roswell Bookbinding, Steffen Bookbinders, and Eckhart & Co. — now all sit within the BindTech umbrella.
The company also operates warehousing and fulfilment services under its Publishers Storage & Shipping (PSSC) brand, broadening its value chain beyond binding alone.
What could go wrong? Rapid consolidation in a niche industry carries integration risk. Merging seven companies in 10 years means blending different cultures, systems, and customer relationships — any of which can create friction. A shrinking physical book market could also pressure margins if demand softens.
The signal: BindTech's seven acquisitions in a decade illustrate a classic roll-up playbook in a fragmented, craft-heavy industry where few players have the scale to invest in modern finishing technologies like edge printing. With management openly signalling more deals in the pipeline for the second half of 2026, the consolidation wave in bookbinding shows no sign of cresting — raising the stakes for remaining independents who must now compete against a platform with 600,000 square feet of capacity and national reach.
