Trompo Capital acquires Mexico's Nubarium to tackle digital identity fraud in Latam

What's the deal? Trompo Capital has acquired Nubarium, a Mexican startup specialising in biometric identity validation and KYC processes. The deal — which includes both domestic and international capital — is aimed at expanding Nubarium's infrastructure across Latin America and accelerating its technology development.

Founded in 2017 by Roberto Ramos, Nubarium operates in Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Panama. Jorge Todd Souza and Félix Mahuad now serve as co-chief executive officers, while Ramos stays on as an adviser.

Why now? Fake accounts and identity fraud are making digital authentication increasingly expensive and complex across Latin America. According to IMARC Group, the region's digital identity market hit $3B in 2025 and could reach $10.7B by 2034.

Sectors like banking, insurance, fintech, and gaming face mounting pressure from stricter security standards and regulatory compliance requirements. "Many companies grew faster than their authentication capabilities, and this has raised the risk of fraud," Todd Souza said.

Nubarium recently earned iBeta PAD Level 2 accreditation for its liveness detection technology — a certification that tests a system's ability to spot spoofing attempts using photos, videos, masks, or 3D models during remote validation.

What could go wrong? Latin America's digital identity market is crowded and fragmented across multiple jurisdictions, each with its own regulatory framework. Scaling biometric infrastructure across seven countries simultaneously is operationally demanding and capital-intensive.

The signal: The acquisition reflects a broader trend of consolidation in Latam's identity verification space as fraud costs rise and regulators tighten onboarding requirements. As more economic activity moves online, companies that can reliably verify users at scale are becoming critical infrastructure — and attractive acquisition targets.
