SanMar to acquire BELLA+CANVAS, keep it as independent brand
What's the deal? SanMar, a top-40 promotional products supplier, has agreed to acquire BELLA+CANVAS, a leading fashion blanks provider. Financial terms were not disclosed. BELLA+CANVAS will continue to operate as an independent brand, with its products sold through authorised wholesale distributors nationwide.
Megan Spire, a current executive vice president at BELLA+CANVAS, will stay on to lead the brand going forward.
Why now? BELLA+CANVAS co-founders Danny Harris and Marco DeGeorge have been looking for the right next step for a brand they started in a garage in 1992. The pair launched a women's line (Bella) in 1998, a men's line (Canvas) in 2000, and merged them in 2002.
Harris said it was "critical to find an owner that would champion the brand's DNA." DeGeorge emphasised that selling to a privately held, family-owned company like SanMar — rather than a private equity firm — was paramount.
What could go wrong? Acquisitions that promise to keep a brand "independent" don't always deliver on that promise. Integration pressures, cost-cutting mandates, or strategic shifts at the parent company can erode a brand's identity over time. BELLA+CANVAS's distributors and loyal customers will be watching closely to see whether the brand's product quality, positioning, and culture survive intact under new ownership.
The signal: The deal reflects a broader consolidation trend in the promotional products and wholesale apparel industry, where scale in inventory, logistics, and service increasingly determines who wins. SanMar's president and chief executive officer Jeremy Lott framed the acquisition in those terms, promising to give BELLA+CANVAS "the focused ownership and resources it needs" alongside deeper inventory and operational support.
The founders' explicit preference for a family-owned buyer over private equity also speaks to a growing sentiment among brand builders who want long-term stewardship rather than a financial sponsor's shorter investment horizon.
