Red Cat acquires Quaze Technologies to power autonomous drones wirelessly

Red Cat Holdings, a US-based defence drone and robotics company listed on Nasdaq, has acquired Quaze Technologies, a Québec-based developer of wireless power transfer technology for unmanned systems. The deal, announced on May 20, adds wireless charging capability to Red Cat's product lineup, targeting what it calls one of the biggest remaining barriers to fully autonomous operations: keeping machines powered in the field.
Quaze will operate as an independent business unit within Red Cat, continuing to develop its wireless power platform for integration across Red Cat's drone and robotic systems while also serving third-party manufacturers.
Why now? Autonomous drones and robots have made huge strides in navigation and mission execution, but most still depend on manual battery swaps or finicky connector-based charging. In contested or harsh environments — think sand, ice, debris — those approaches often fail. As militaries push toward persistent, distributed operations across air, land, and sea, the power problem has become an acute bottleneck.
Red Cat is expanding beyond aerial drones into maritime and multi-platform autonomy, making reliable field recharging essential. Quaze's core technology, its QU6 electronic architecture, turns large surfaces into wireless energy access points without requiring precise alignment or physical contact — a fit for rough conditions where conventional chargers break down.
What could go wrong? Wireless power transfer for military-grade systems is still an emerging technology. Scaling it reliably across diverse platforms — from drone-in-a-box solutions to uncrewed surface vessels and underwater stations — is a significant engineering challenge. Integration across Red Cat's growing product family will test both companies' execution. And maintaining Quaze's platform-agnostic model while prioritising Red Cat's own systems could create tension with third-party customers.
