LiveWire acquires Bend-based EV dirt bike startup Dust Moto

What's the deal? LiveWire, the electric motorcycle company, has acquired Dust Moto, a Bend, Oregon-based startup that builds electric off-road dirt bikes. The deal gives Dust Moto access to LiveWire's scale, resources, and global distribution.

"Joining LiveWire marks an exciting next chapter in our journey," said Dust Moto chief executive officer Colin Godby. "With LiveWire's scale, resources, and global reach, we can bring our electric off-road bike to market with a worldwide audience."

Why now? The electric off-road market is expanding fast, driven by riders drawn to the torque and performance of electric motors — plus lower noise, reduced maintenance, and simpler operation compared to combustion engines. LiveWire, which has focused on on-road electric motorcycles, wants to push into off-road territory.

What could go wrong? Startup acquisitions by larger companies don't always go smoothly. Dust Moto will need to preserve its scrappy, rider-first culture while integrating into a bigger corporate structure. And the broader EV market faces headwinds from shifting consumer sentiment, supply chain challenges, and policy uncertainty around clean-energy incentives.

The signal: LiveWire's acquisition of Dust Moto reflects a broader consolidation trend in the electric two-wheeler space, where established players are buying niche startups to fill portfolio gaps rather than developing new segments in-house. Oregon continues to punch above its weight in EV experimentation — fellow state company Arcimoto has pursued a similar path electrifying unconventional vehicle categories — suggesting the region's ecosystem is producing acquisition targets that larger firms find hard to ignore.
