The company's app and management platform exploit electricity price fluctuations to cut charging costs for private drivers, fleet operators, and charger owners alike. Co-founders Nico Spoelstra and Dan Pezim, both EV charging veterans, built Tap to "orchestrate supply and demand at home and in public," as Pezim put it.
Why now? EV adoption is accelerating across Europe, but charging costs and complexity remain key friction points. Tap plans to use the funding to expand across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, and Ireland.
The round also backs a slate of new initiatives: vehicle-to-grid projects that let car owners stabilise the grid and earn money, smart home integrations linking charging with household energy systems, and open smart charging for public infrastructure.
What could go wrong? Tap's model depends on volatile electricity pricing — if energy markets stabilise or regulators intervene in dynamic pricing, the savings it can deliver may shrink. The EV charging software market is also crowded, with incumbents and utilities competing for the same drivers and fleet customers.
The signal: Tap Electric sits at the early growth stage, yet it has assembled a board with unusually deep e-mobility operating experience — No Such Ventures' Thijn van Helvoirt founded Check, and Shamrock Ventures' Alef Arendsen founded NewMotion. That pedigree, combined with follow-on commitments from all three existing investors, suggests the smart money sees EV charging shifting from a hardware land-grab to a software and energy-optimisation play where AI-driven cost savings become the real competitive moat.
