Sun King secures $4.5M loan from Hivos-Triodos via Symbiotics

Sun King designs, finances, and sells solar systems to households and small businesses that lack grid connections. It deploys roughly 350,000 solar kits per month through a network of 41,000 field agents responsible for sales, installation, and maintenance.
More than 90% of its products are sold via pay-as-you-go plans spanning 12 to 24 months. The company says this model has enabled it to extend $1.9B in financing to over 10 million customers to date.
Why now? Decentralised energy solutions are playing an increasingly central role in Africa's electrification strategies. A report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in October 2025, titled "Financing Electricity Access in Africa," highlighted that mini-grids and standalone solar systems are among the most cost-effective ways to expand electricity access across the continent.
Sub-Saharan Africa still has the world's largest electricity access gap, making it a magnet for impact-oriented lenders like Hivos-Triodos Fonds.
What could go wrong? Pay-as-you-go models carry credit risk — customers in low-income rural areas may struggle with repayments, especially during economic shocks or poor harvest seasons. Currency volatility across Sun King's 11 African markets also adds financial complexity.
Scaling a 41,000-strong agent network brings operational challenges around quality control, training, and fraud prevention. And while $4.5M supports incremental growth, it is modest relative to the scale of the company's ambitions and the continent's vast unelectrified population.
