Aureon Space Systems raises angel round to chase asteroid mining
What's the deal? Aureon Space Systems, a Tokyo-based deep-space resource startup founded in October 2025, has completed an angel round of funding using J-KISS convertible notes. The company claims it is the first Japanese startup focused on asteroid resource development to raise outside capital.
Aureon's goal is ambitious: transport asteroids closer to human reach and extract valuable resources — carbon, water, and metals — to support activity across the solar system. The specific funding amount was not disclosed.
The startup is developing a "mass driver" propulsion system that converts asteroid material into thrust, eliminating the need to carry propellant from Earth. If proven, it could remove a fundamental barrier to large-scale deep-space transport.
Why now? Despite being barely eight months old, Aureon has moved quickly. It filed a Japanese patent for its core technology in November 2025, was selected for SPACETIDE's S-Booster 2025 programme (aimed at cultivating future space unicorns), and secured a spot in the European Space Resources Innovation Centre's (ESRIC) Start-up Support Programme.
The company will use the funds to accelerate proof-of-concept work on its propulsion system, build out its development team and technical partnerships, and expand European and domestic networks — including engagement on international frameworks around asteroid resource use.
What could go wrong? Asteroid mining remains one of the most speculative corners of the space industry. The signal: Aureon's raise reflects renewed global interest in space resources after years of dormancy. Governments — from the US Artemis Accords to Luxembourg's space mining framework — are laying legal groundwork, and ESRIC's support for Aureon suggests European institutions see commercial potential in the sector again.
Japan, with its strong heritage in asteroid science through JAXA's Hayabusa missions, is a natural home for this kind of venture. Whether Aureon can bridge the enormous distance between concept and commercial reality will depend on how quickly it can prove out its propulsion technology — and attract the deep-pocketed partners it will eventually need.
