Mistral AI raises €1.7B Series C led by ASML at €11.7B valuation

What's the deal? Mistral AI, the French AI company, has closed a €1.7B Series C funding round at a €11.7B post-money valuation. Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML led the round, which also drew participation from existing investors including DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, and NVIDIA.

The investment will fuel Mistral's scientific research and its push to build frontier AI models for strategic industries. The company says it will continue developing custom, decentralised AI solutions for complex engineering and industrial problems.

Why now? Mistral has spent the past two years building its model lineup and forging partnerships with corporate and industrial players. The round positions it to compete at the frontier of AI development — a race that demands ever-larger capital commitments for compute infrastructure and research.

ASML's involvement signals a deeper convergence between AI and semiconductors. "This investment brings together two technology leaders operating in the same value chain," said Mistral chief executive officer Arthur Mensch. "We have the ambition to help ASML and its numerous partners solve current and future engineering challenges through AI, and ultimately to advance the full semiconductor and AI value chain."

ASML chief executive officer Christophe Fouquet called it a strategic partnership aimed at generating "clear benefits for ASML customers through innovative products and solutions enabled by AI."

What could go wrong? Mistral faces formidable competition from OpenAIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, AnthropicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Google DeepMind, and a growing roster of well-funded challengers. Frontier AI research is extraordinarily expensive, and €1.7B — while substantial — may not last long given the cost of training large models.

The company also needs to prove that its enterprise and industrial focus can generate revenue at a scale that justifies its €11.7B valuation.

The signal: ASML's lead role marks a notable shift in who bankrolls frontier AI; as a corporate investor sitting upstream in the semiconductor value chain, its commitment suggests that industrial heavyweights increasingly view AI model development as inseparable from their own R&D roadmaps. For Mistral — now at late growth stage according to Dealroom — the round also underscores that European-headquartered AI companies can attract capital at a scale once reserved for their US rivals, even while emphasising independence from the major cloud platforms.
