The deal is structured as a two-year operational engagement that pairs capital with hands-on support across product engineering, international expansion, go-to-market strategy, governance, and dealer network access.
Smilee's platform lets car dealerships engage, qualify, and convert buyers automatically around the clock. Rather than traditional lead generation, it enables fully conversational sales workflows integrated directly into dealership backend systems. The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
Why now? AI-native sales infrastructure for automotive retail remains an early and underpenetrated market globally, according to TGC Capital Partners. The Nordic region — where Smilee is based — offers a strong launchpad thanks to high digital adoption, competitive dealership ecosystems, and growing demand for measurable conversion efficiency.
"Smilee has built exactly the kind of category-defining product we are looking for in our investments — a genuinely agentic platform solving a real commercial problem for car dealers," said Gaute Green-Stensrud, partner at TGC Capital Partners.
What could go wrong? The automotive retail sector is notoriously conservative when it comes to adopting new technology, and convincing dealerships to hand over sales conversations to AI agents could prove a tough sell. Smilee also faces a crowded field of AI sales tools — though few are purpose-built for auto retail — and expanding beyond the Nordics will test whether the product translates across different markets and dealer cultures.
Without a disclosed funding amount, it's also unclear how much runway Smilee has to execute on ambitious international expansion plans within the two-year engagement window.
The signal: TGC Capital Partners' bet on Smilee underscores a wider shift in AI investment toward deeply vertical platforms that embed into specific industry workflows, rather than horizontal tools competing on general-purpose capabilities. With AI-native sales infrastructure for automotive retail still largely underpenetrated globally, the race is on for a category leader to emerge — and the operator-led investment model, pairing capital with dealer network access and hands-on execution, suggests that distribution and integration depth, not just technology, will determine who wins.
