The Espoo-based company transforms lignin — a complex byproduct of the pulp industry — into uniform nano-sized particles that serve as a key component in adhesives and coatings, replacing fossil-based epoxies.
The investment will accelerate commercial development and lay the groundwork for building an industrial-scale production facility.
Why now? The world's pulp mills produce roughly 50 million tonnes of lignin each year, yet over 95% of it is simply burned for heat. Lignin's chemical complexity has long blocked its use as a material. LignoSphere's patented process, developed at Aalto University and Häme University of Applied Sciences, cracks that problem by restructuring lignin into colloidal nanoparticles in an energy-efficient, closed-loop system.
The resulting coatings and adhesives adhere well to metal, concrete, and wood, and show strong performance in wear resistance and corrosion prevention. In adhesive tests, the materials withstood extremely high shear forces — enough for use in engineered wood products like glulam beams.
What could go wrong? Scaling nano-material production from lab to factory is notoriously difficult. LignoSphere must prove it can maintain consistent quality and competitive pricing at industrial volumes. The company also faces the challenge of convincing manufacturers to switch from well-established epoxy supply chains, even though it claims end users won't need to significantly alter existing processes.
