Fluent raises $2.2M testnet round for its blended-execution L2

What's the deal? Fluent, an Ethereum Layer 2 network that lets smart contracts from different virtual machines talk to each other, has closed a $2.2M testnet round. The funding will support testnet operations and the first wave of apps building on the platform.

The round was backed by echo.xyz, Native Crypto, Q42, WAGMI Ventures, and TPC. It builds on Fluent's $8M round announced in February 2025, led by Polychain Capital with participation from Primitive Ventures, Public Works, Dao5, Nomad Capital, Builder Capital, and Symbolic Capital.

Fluent's core proposition: smart contracts written for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Solana Virtual Machine (SVM), and WebAssembly (Wasm) can directly call each other within a single execution environment. That means developers can mix and match tools, languages, and existing contracts across ecosystems without being locked into one VM.

Why now? Blockchain development remains fragmented across competing virtual machines, each with its own tooling, languages, and contract libraries. Fluent has already shipped two private devnet versions and runs a public devnet supporting Solidity, Vyper, and Rust contracts. The testnet round signals a push toward a broader public launch.

The network also uses zero-knowledge rollups for Ethereum-grade security and supports parallel execution across all three VM types — features designed to boost throughput while maintaining compatibility with existing Ethereum infrastructure.

What could go wrong? Unifying three distinct virtual machines under one roof is technically ambitious. Cross-VM composability introduces new attack surfaces, and any bugs in how contracts interact across environments could have outsized consequences. Fluent also faces competition from other L2s and cross-chain protocols racing to solve similar fragmentation problems.

Adoption is another question. Developers need compelling reasons to build on a new L2 rather than stick with established ecosystems. The testnet phase will be a critical proving ground.

The signal: The funding reflects a broader bet that the future of blockchain development isn't about picking one VM — it's about making them work together. As Solana and Ethereum ecosystems grow in parallel, infrastructure that bridges their developer communities could capture significant value.

With $10.2M raised in total, Fluent is positioning itself at the intersection of multi-VM interoperability and Ethereum scaling — two of the most active areas in crypto infrastructure today.
