Vulcan Energy reaches financial close on $3.9B Lionheart Project

What's the deal? Vulcan Energy has achieved financial close on $3.9 billion in equity and debt financing for its flagship Lionheart Project — an integrated lithium extraction and renewable energy development in the Upper Rhine Valley between Germany and France.

The project targets production capacity of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate per year, aimed at supplying Europe's electric vehicle battery supply chain while providing renewable heat to local communities.

"Reaching financial close is a significant milestone and reflects the continued support from our financing partners, including European and German government agencies, commercial banks, and strategic industrial partners," Vulcan chief executive officer Felicity Gooding said.

Why now? Vulcan secured its primary financing package in December alongside a positive final investment decision, which settled an underwritten institutional placement and entitlement offer and kicked off construction. Achieving financial close now unlocks the remaining funds, subject to ongoing drawdown conditions.

The financing spans capital arrangements at the project, subsidiary, and corporate level.

What could go wrong? Large-scale lithium projects carry execution risk — construction delays, cost overruns, and commodity price swings could all complicate Vulcan's plans. The company has pledged to deliver Lionheart "on time, on budget and to nameplate capacity," but the gap between ambition and delivery on a $3.9 billion build is wide.

Geothermal lithium extraction at this scale is also relatively unproven commercially, adding technology risk to the mix.

The signal: Vulcan Energy, classified by Dealroom as a late-growth-stage company, is attempting something commercially unproven at scale — extracting battery-grade lithium from geothermal brines with a zero-carbon process. The involvement of European and German government agencies alongside commercial banks signals that public institutions are willing to underwrite significant technology risk to onshore critical mineral supply chains ahead of the continent's EV ramp-up.
