UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory backs Rivelin Robotics' microfactories for 3D-printed parts

Why now? Defence agencies worldwide are racing to shorten supply chains and manufacture parts on demand. 3D printing has surged in military adoption, but the post-processing bottleneck remains a weak link — one that still depends on skilled human labour and introduces variability.

Rivelin won Formnext's Startup Challenge in 2022 for its NetShape robotic solution and has since gained traction in aerospace, medical, automotive, and energy sectors. It is now expanding into defence while building a presence across Spain, France, Germany, and the US.

What could go wrong? Automating post-processing for defence parts carries high stakes. Components used in military applications face strict quality and certification requirements, and any failure in robotic finishing could compromise part integrity. The signal: Rivelin Robotics sits at early growth stage, and government-backed funding from the Dstl — a non-profit investor channelling Defence and Security Accelerator capital — suggests the company's path to scale will be shaped more by public procurement than typical venture dynamics. With only five microfactories sold so far, the defence contract is less a validation of commercial traction than a bet that post-processing automation will become essential plumbing for distributed military manufacturing.
