Focused Energy raises $240M Series A led by RWE for Germany's first laser fusion plant

What's the deal? Focused Energy, a laser fusion startup spun out of TU Darmstadt in 2021, has raised $240M in a funding round led by German energy giant RWEDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The capital will go almost entirely toward building what the company says will be Germany's first laser fusion power plant on the site of a decommissioned RWE nuclear plant in Biblis, Hesse — with a target completion date of 2035.

The round brings Focused Energy close to unicorn status. Other investors include Sprind (Germany's federal agency for breakthrough innovation), Hessen's state investment arm, and Frankfurt-based startup network FuturyDealroom has a profile for this one. Why now? Focused Energy originally had its headquarters in Delaware, hoping to tap into a billion-dollar US fusion funding programme under former president Joe Biden. But co-founder Markus Roth told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that Germany has now overtaken the US in laser fusion research, and conditions for building a plant are better in Germany. "People in the US are almost looking at Germany with envy," he said.

The Biblis site offers a rare advantage: it already has rail connections, cooling systems, grid access, and a skilled workforce from its nuclear past. In January, the last cooling tower of the old nuclear plant was demolished — a symbolic passing of the baton.

What could go wrong? Fusion energy remains deeply speculative as a commercial technology. Critics point out that the road from research to a working power plant requires billions more in investment, and no fusion company anywhere has yet produced net energy at scale. The investors in this round say they're prepared to fund the entire construction phase, but that commitment will be tested over a decade-long timeline.

The signal: RWE's lead role here is notable — as a corporate investor, it is not just writing a cheque but offering a decommissioned nuclear site with ready-made grid infrastructure, turning a strategic asset into a fusion launchpad. Focused Energy, classified as a "breakout" stage company on Dealroom, is now one of the best-funded laser fusion startups in Europe, and the heavy involvement of public bodies like Sprind and Hesse's state investment arm suggests Germany is making an industrial policy bet that fusion can anchor its post-nuclear energy future.
