Mowi raises NOK 3.5B in green bonds, part of >€500M sustainable finance push

What's the deal? MowiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the world's largest salmon producer, has issued more than half a billion euros in green bonds across two rounds in 2025. In January, it completed a €200M five-year green bond — the first such issuance by a seafood company. In April, it followed up with NOK 3.5B (roughly €297M) in senior unsecured green bonds split into five- and eight-year tranches.

The proceeds fund projects under Mowi's Green and Sustainability-Linked Financing Framework, including sustainable aquaculture, feed production, and freshwater plants using recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology. The bonds are part of the company's broader sustainability strategy, called The Blue Revolution Plan.

Why now? Investor appetite for green debt instruments continues to grow, and Mowi's January bond was oversubscribed by both green-focused and traditional bond investors. The company is capitalising on that demand while locking in financing for capital-intensive infrastructure upgrades — particularly land-based RAS facilities, which require significant upfront investment.

Mowi's green bond framework received a positive second opinion from CICERODealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a leading centre for climate research, reinforcing its alignment with international standards.

What could go wrong? Green bonds carry reputational risk if proceeds aren't deployed transparently. Aquaculture remains controversial among environmental groups over concerns about sea lice, fish escapes, and water pollution. If Mowi's sustainability claims come under scrutiny, the "green" label on its debt could face challenges.

The January bond was priced at three-month EURIBOR + 1.60%, a spread that reflects both the company's credit profile and current rate conditions. Rising interest rates or a downturn in salmon prices could pressure the company's ability to service this growing debt load.

The signal: Mowi's ability to raise over €500M in oversubscribed green bonds — as a mature seafood producer, not a tech darling — suggests sustainable finance is firmly expanding into traditional food and agriculture sectors. The fact that both green-focused and conventional bond investors competed for the paper indicates that credible sustainability frameworks can meaningfully lower the cost of capital for industries not typically associated with ESG leadership.
