ATOM raises ¥3B seed round to build humanoid robots in Japan
What's the deal? ATOM, a Tokyo-based startup developing bipedal, dual-armed humanoid AI robots, has raised ¥3B (roughly $20M) in a seed round co-led by Beyond Next Ventures. The company plans to build Japan-made humanoid robots powered by Physical AI — technology that lets robots perceive their environment, make decisions, and act in the real world.
Founded by chief executive officer Shunsuke Aoki, ATOM is targeting manufacturing and logistics, where it aims to automate tasks like transport, replenishment, and kitting. The funds will go toward strengthening its Physical AI and robotics capabilities, hiring AI engineers, and building business infrastructure for deployment.
Why now? Japan faces a rapidly shrinking workforce, and many factory and warehouse tasks still depend on human labour — including work in hazardous conditions. Conventional industrial robots handle predefined tasks well but struggle with the variability found on manufacturing lines that change frequently or logistics sites designed for people.
Recent advances in AI have made humanoid robots a more viable platform for real-world deployment. ATOM's pitch is that it develops both the hardware and the AI foundation models in-house, creating a feedback loop: data from real-world operations refines both the AI and the robot design.
What could go wrong? Humanoid robotics is notoriously hard to commercialise. The field is littered with companies that built impressive demos but couldn't bridge the gap to reliable, cost-effective deployment. ATOM will face stiff competition from deep-pocketed rivals globally — including well-funded US and Chinese startups — while trying to prove its robots can handle messy, real-world factory floors.
Hardware development is capital-intensive, and ¥3B, while a large seed round by Japanese standards, may not stretch far in a race against competitors with billions in backing.
The signal: This round reflects two converging trends. First, the global humanoid robot arms race is intensifying, with governments and investors increasingly viewing the technology through the lens of industrial competitiveness and economic security. ATOM explicitly frames domestic development as essential for Japan to compete in next-generation industrial tech.
Second, Japan's demographic crisis is making automation not just appealing but urgent. The country's unique combination of advanced manufacturing heritage, severe labour shortages, and national security concerns around technology dependence creates fertile ground for a homegrown humanoid robotics champion — if ATOM can deliver.
