Eli Lilly acquires Curevo, LimmaTech and Vaccine Company in $3.8B infectious disease push
What's the deal? Eli Lilly has announced three simultaneous acquisitions to build a new infectious disease portfolio. The deals — totalling up to $3.83B in headline value (upfront + milestones, with the upfront splits undisclosed) — cover Curevo Inc., LimmaTech Biologics AG, and Vaccine Company, Inc.
Curevo (up to $1.5B): Lead candidate amezosvatein is an adjuvanted subunit shingles vaccine that, in a Phase 2 head-to-head against the standard of care, matched immune response on all primary endpoints while reducing activity-limiting fatigue, chills and injection-site pain by more than half.
LimmaTech Biologics (up to $780M): A Swiss company developing vaccines against antimicrobial-resistance-prone bacterial pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. Lead program LTB-SA7 is in Phase 1 against S. aureus, the leading cause of surgical-site infection.
Vaccine Company (up to $1.55B): Developing In Vivo Nanoparticle (IVN) technology that mimics the antigen display of virus-like-particle vaccines without the manufacturing burden. Lead program is a five-antigen Phase 1-ready Epstein-Barr Virus candidate — a target now linked to multiple sclerosis and several malignancies.
Why now? The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped how pharma companies think about infectious disease. What was once seen as a low-margin, neglected category is now strategically important. Lilly, flush with cash from its blockbuster weight-loss and diabetes drugs, is deploying capital into new growth areas — and facing looming patent cliffs that argue for diversification beyond cardiometabolic.
The signal: Big pharma is on an acquisition spree, and the targets are getting more diverse. Lilly's triple deal reflects a broader trend: companies with dominant positions in one therapeutic area are using M&A to hedge against concentration risk. Infectious disease, long underfunded by the private sector, is attracting serious capital again.
