Pramatra Space raises pre-seed led by Seafund for quantum-secure satellite communications

Try Dealroom →, the startup is developing infrastructure to help enterprises prepare for the rise of quantum computing, which is expected to eventually break conventional encryption.
Pramatra uses Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) — a technology that securely generates and distributes encryption keys — across data centres, enterprise networks, and space infrastructure. It plans to deliver this through a "QKD-as-a-service" model, letting enterprises adopt quantum-safe security without replacing existing systems.
Why now? The threat quantum computing poses to current encryption is no longer theoretical. Governments and enterprises worldwide are racing to adopt quantum-resistant security before powerful enough machines arrive. Pramatra said it has already validated its proprietary photonics integrated circuit (PIC) chip for quantum entanglement-based QKD at IIT Madras and has booked an in-orbit demonstration mission for 2027 with a satellite bus manufacturer.
"The clock is ticking, and the nation must prepare for the quantum era," said Richa Hukumchand. "Pramatra is our contribution to ensuring India doesn't just participate in the quantum era — it helps define it."
The fresh capital will go toward advancing the PIC chip to flight qualification and accelerating product development.
What could go wrong? Quantum security is a crowded ambition globally, with well-funded players in the US, China, and Europe already running satellite-based QKD experiments. Pramatra's 2027 in-orbit demo timeline is ambitious for a pre-seed company. Hardware startups also face longer development cycles and steeper capital needs than software peers — meaning more fundraising will be needed soon.
The signal: The backing of Pixxel founder Awais Ahmed as an angel investor underscores how India's maturing space-tech ecosystem is now seeding its own next generation of startups, with founders reinvesting expertise and capital into adjacent frontier sectors like quantum security. Pramatra's "QKD-as-a-service" approach — letting enterprises layer quantum-safe encryption onto existing infrastructure — could lower adoption barriers in a market where most competitors still require costly system overhauls.
