Avantis Group secures Leon Capital investment for maritime, energy and defence expansion

What's the deal? Avantis Group, a Cardiff-based specialist engineering firm serving the maritime and energy industries, has secured a strategic investment from funds advised by Leon CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → LLP, a London-based European private equity firm. The terms were not disclosed.

Chief executive Thomas David, chairman Chris David, and the existing leadership team will retain a controlling interest and operational control. The pair took over the business in 2022 through a management buyout part-funded by the Development Bank of WalesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The capital will fund organic growth, operational expansion, new hires, technical capability, and infrastructure — with a push into digital infrastructure and defence markets alongside its core maritime and energy work.

Why now? Avantis has spent three years building its platform since the 2022 buyout. The new investment signals the company is ready for its next growth phase, particularly in green technologies, life cycle management services, and adjacent sectors like defence.

"We were deliberate in selecting a partner that understands our industries and aligns with our long-term vision," David said. "This capital strengthens our platform and enables us to pursue growth opportunities while maintaining the independence and culture that define our company."

What could go wrong? Expanding into defence and digital infrastructure means entering markets with different regulatory demands and entrenched competitors. Balancing growth across multiple sectors while preserving the specialist culture that built the business will be a test for the leadership team.

The Development Bank of Wales, meanwhile, is exiting its position — removing a public-sector backer that supported the company's foundational stage.

The signal: Leon Capital's assembly of heavyweight maritime advisors — including DNVDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s former chief executive and SEBDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s former head of shipping finance — points to ambitions that stretch well beyond a regional engineering play. The deal fits a broader private equity pattern of backing niche, asset-light engineering firms with exposure to energy transition and defence, two sectors underpinned by long-term government spending commitments across Europe.
