Pixxel Builds Orbital Network for 'Planetary Intelligence'

What's the deal? Indian space-tech startup Pixxel is building a constellation of hyperspectral satellites that can collect and process data in orbit. The company has raised $95 million in total funding to deploy up to 18 satellites, starting with its six-satellite "Fireflies" constellation.

Pixxel's satellites combine hyperspectral imaging — which captures data across many narrow light bands — with onboard edge computing. This lets the satellites analyse materials and environmental conditions in real time, spotting things invisible to standard cameras.

The Fireflies constellation promises daily global coverage at 5-metre resolution. Pixxel is also building an AI-powered Earth observation platform called Aurora and has partnered with Sarvam to develop orbital data centres.

Why now? Falling launch costs, driven largely by SpaceX, have made ambitious satellite networks far more feasible. India's space-tech sector is booming, giving Pixxel a favourable home-market tailwind.
