Medtronic to acquire SPR Therapeutics for $650M in chronic pain push
What's the deal? MedtronicDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the Ireland-based medtech giant, has agreed to buy privately held SPR Therapeutics for about $650 million in cash.
The acquisition gives Medtronic access to SPR's SPRINT peripheral nerve stimulation system — a 60-day therapy that provides pain relief without requiring a permanent implant.
SPR Therapeutics focuses on non-opioid, non-surgical, minimally invasive pain management. Medtronic said the deal will help it reach more patients with less invasive options.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of Medtronic's fiscal 2027, which began on April 25, subject to regulatory approvals.
Why now? Medtronic has been on an acquisition tear. In April 2026, it completed its $585 million purchase of CathWorks — a headline figure with additional undisclosed milestone payments on top — a cardiovascular-focused device company. In March 2026, it agreed to buy Scientia Vascular for $550 million to bolster its neurovascular portfolio.
The SPR deal is the third major acquisition in quick succession, signalling an aggressive push to fill gaps across its product lines.
What could go wrong? Integrating three sizable acquisitions in rapid sequence carries execution risk. Medtronic must absorb distinct product lines, sales teams, and regulatory obligations simultaneously. The SPRINT system also occupies a relatively niche segment of the pain management market, and its commercial trajectory as part of a much larger organisation remains to be proven.
The signal: Medtronic's shopping spree reflects a broader trend in medtech: large incumbents are buying their way into fast-growing, less invasive treatment categories rather than building from scratch. The focus on non-opioid pain relief is especially notable as the healthcare industry continues to seek alternatives to addictive painkillers.
With nearly $1.8 billion committed across three deals between March and May 2026, Medtronic is betting that bolt-on acquisitions will drive its next phase of growth.
