Ex-Alibaba Qwen lead raises hundreds of millions at $2B valuation for new AI lab

What's the deal? Junyang LinDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, former technical leader of Alibaba's QwenDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → large language model, has launched a new AI laboratory focused on world models and embodied intelligence. He is raising several hundred million dollars at a valuation of roughly $2B — a rare figure for a brand-new Chinese AI startup with no product yet.

HongShanDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (formerly Sequoia China) and Gaorong CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → are in talks to invest. Lin has recruited core team members from ByteDance, Tencent, and overseas institutions.

Why now? Lin departed Alibaba on March 4, 2026, one day after learning the Qwen team would be split into separate horizontal units — a restructuring he opposed. During his three-year tenure, he had built Qwen into the world's most-downloaded open-source LLM family, surpassing 1 billion downloads and 200,000 derivative models by January 2026.

Embodied intelligence was unfinished business. In October 2025, Lin formed a small robotics team within Qwen and publicly argued that foundation models should "move from the virtual to the physical world."

What could go wrong? Chinese AI labs face headwinds that US counterparts don't. Multiple investors told The Information that US chip export controls make computing access a significant hurdle.

The exit logic differs too. US AI valuations often assume eventual acquisition by a tech giant — a path less established in China.

The signal: Lin joins a wave of elite researchers launching world-model and embodied-AI ventures at eye-watering valuations. World Labs, founded by Fei-Fei Li, closed $1B at a $5B valuation in February 2026. Thinking Machines Lab, led by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, launched at $10B.

The pattern is clear: top AI talent can now command billion-dollar valuations before shipping a single product. The question is whether China's market can sustain those bets.
