SAP bets €1bn on European tabular AI lab with Prior Labs acquisition

What's the deal? SAP has agreed to acquire Prior Labs, a Freiburg-based startup that builds tabular foundation models (TFMs) — AI purpose-built for structured business data like spreadsheets and databases. SAP will invest more than €1bn over four years to scale Prior Labs into a frontier AI research lab. Financial terms were not officially disclosed, but according to journalist Chris O'Brien, SAP paid approximately €700M upfront with a €300M earnout — valuing Prior Labs at over €1bn and making it one of Europe's newest unicorns. Competition is also mounting: Microsoft, Google, and AWS are all moving into tabular AI, and Prior Labs' lead — however real — is not permanent. The pace at which SAP deploys the €1bn, hires researchers, and ships products will determine whether Prior Labs leads the category or becomes a cautionary tale.

The signal: The deal is the most significant enterprise AI research investment ever made in Europe by a European company, and a rare example of an academic team — founded at a German university — producing a Nature-published model, a three-million-download open-source tool, and a billion-euro outcome in under two years. For European AI policy-makers who have long asked whether the continent can build, rather than rent, AI infrastructure, this is the most concrete answer yet. The structure — an autonomous, well-funded lab inside a strategic corporate parent — echoes the Anthropic-Google and Mistral-Microsoft models, but with both sides of the deal headquartered in Europe.
