ATMOS Space Cargo raises €25.7M to build Europe's orbital return fleet
What's the deal? ATMOS Space Cargo, a Franco-German company building orbital return vehicles, has closed a €25.7M Series A. The round is co-led by Balnord and Expansion, with participation from Keen Defence and Security and the European Innovation Council (EIC) through blended grant-and-equity financing. OTB Ventures, High-Tech Gründerfonds, APEX Ventures, Seraphim, and several other investors also joined.
The money will fund three things: a fleet of three PHOENIX 2 spacecraft, a new defence-focused unit called ATMOS WORKS, and early development of PHOENIX 3 — a next-generation vehicle designed to carry roughly one metric tonne, ten times the capacity of its predecessor.
Why now? ATMOS completed a demonstration flight of PHOENIX 1 in April 2025. The Series A marks its shift from proving the technology to running routine missions.
Europe currently has no independent, repeatable way to bring cargo back from orbit. The three-vehicle PHOENIX 2 campaign is designed to change that, with recovery operations planned near the Azores under a Portuguese commercial re-entry licence. The company is also launching ATMOS WORKS to serve government and defence clients — a timely move as European institutions push for strategic autonomy in space.
What could go wrong? Moving from one demo flight to a three-mission operational campaign is a big leap. Re-entry technology is unforgiving, and any failure could stall the programme and erode investor confidence. The company also faces the challenge of building demand for a service that doesn't yet exist as a commercial market in Europe — it must convince research institutions, industrial players, and governments to commit payloads.
Defence revenue, while promising, comes with long procurement cycles and heavy compliance requirements that can strain a startup's resources.
The signal: This round reflects two converging trends in European space and defence. First, investors are betting on infrastructure plays — the unsexy but essential plumbing of the space economy — rather than satellite constellations alone. Second, dual-use technology is increasingly attractive, as Europe's push for sovereignty creates funding tailwinds for startups that can serve both commercial and military customers from a single platform.
ATMOS is positioning itself as the logistics layer for Europe's orbital economy. If it delivers, it fills a gap that the continent has relied on others — chiefly the US — to cover.
